Right after the declaration of the Turkish Republic Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his friends decided to establish an institute. This resulted in the establishment of the 'Teacher Training Institute' in 1926. In 1929 the institute was given the name 'Gazi Teacher Training Institute' and continued to educate students under this name for many years. In the Academic year 1949-1950 the institution was given the name 'Gazi Institute of Education'. In 1982, with the act number 2809 the institution gets the name Gazi University together with Ankara Academy of Economy and Commerce, Ankara College of Technical Teachers, Ankara Girls' College of Technical Teachers and Ankara Government Academy of Engineering and Architecture. Actually this university is the continuation of the tradition starting with Republic with a new name. Apart from Gazi Faculty of Education, the academies mentioned above play an important role in the establishment of the university. Ankara Academy of Economics and Commerce was already like a university when it was joined to Gazi University. In those days, the Departments of Medicine Dentistry, Pharmacology and Communication were all a part of this academy. Ankara Academy of State Engineering and Architecture is also included in Gazi University. When it was first built it had 9 faculties, 12 colleges and 4 institutes but the number of these units increases. Today, Gazi University carries out its educational and research activities with its 14 faculties, 5 colleges, 9 Vocational High Schools, 35 research centers and 5 institutes and it still claims it is a higher education institution which is worthy to Atatürk. European Federation for Welding, Joining and Cutting (EWF)

EWF- European Federation for Welding, Joining and Cutting is an international non-profit association aiming at the collaboration in the study and solution of welding-related problems encountered within its fields of competence an the removal of technical barriers. The exchange of scientific and technical information, the preparation of harmonised rules for the education and training of personnel involved in welding, joining and related technologies, and the encouragement of projects for co-operative research able EWF to act as the representative of the welding community in Europe.

EWF, in conjunction with the relevant national welding institutes and organisations of 27 European countries, has made great efforts in the up dating and harmonisation of training and education in the field of welding technology. It was a pioneering organisation in education and qualification, developing the first truly harmonised scheme embracing all European countries for the training of personnel at all levels, from crafts people to professional engineers.

It started in the 1980’s an analysis of the existing levels of education in welding in the EU and EFTA countries and, upon the results, it was possible to define common harmonised levels of education, training and qualification.

Aware of the importance of the mobility of labour within Europe, a lot of work has been put on the harmonisation of a standard examination system, to ensure that welding personnel trained in the EWF system is examined in a uniform way, allowing the implementation of the developed Certification system where the recognition of personnel skills is able according to the same minimum standard.

The harmonised courses, which are now offered in most European countries, combine underpinning knowledge and application experience, thereby providing close links with industrial practice. After the main education, special courses for additional education are offered in many special areas, thus providing a specific education still closer to the job function.

EWF has also developed a high integrity and specialised certification system to guarantee Manufacturer compliance with EN 729 – Certification of Companies. Great care has been taken to detail the interpretation of EN 729 in terms of third party assessment, to specify and register properly trained scheme assessors and devise an operational structure so that certification of Manufacturers will be consistent whenever the scheme rules are applied.

Recognizing the importance of Environment Management Systems for the industrial field, EWF has developed a guideline for the training and qualification of personnel involved in EMSs related to the fabrication of welded products.

Aiming to act as disseminator of the RTD projects and it’s results in presence of a wide audience of potential interested actors from a large number of industrial sectors, EWF’s cooperation in the development of European Projects related to welding or its allied technologies, has been increasing EWF’s capacity in reaching EU industry where technological innovation and improvement is the goal.
